@cypherb0g: Which version of Ubuntu are you running? You might want to check out version 11.04 because the new Unity interface built into it kind feels like using a Mac, just that the dock bar is on the left hand side (which I have seen a lot of Mac users do on their Macs before).

I would install Google Chrome

Avant Window Manager

Playonlinux

Netbeans 9.1

Remove the bottom panel

Shift the trashcan, workspace switcher, add "kill program" to the top panel

Make avant autostart.

Make it so my windows and other partitions auto mount during install of ubuntu by placing a mount point.

Great suggestions. How about a new 10 Things To Do After You Install Ubuntu 10.04 Linux - in a concise way - though all the above give a lot of ideas.

@rsgnagr:

Unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask for assistance with THIS particular issue. There are a lot of people present on www.ubuntuforums.org who have probably encountered the same problem that you are having (a problem that differs from what I've encountered in the past, and it has actually been a long while since I last installed and tried Google Earth out) so I would suggest checking with the forums to see if someone can be of better assistance to you. I really wish I could help, but this issue has me stumped.

Good day Dave,

On 2009-02-12 "kcmm" posted a comment regarding problems with Google Earth and said that deletion of the file "libcrypto.so.0.9.8" was the solution. Your reply was: "The glitch you found seems to be exclusive to version 5. This actually solved a problem on my end (Google Earth 5 would crash while starting)."

In my case Google Earth begins to start but the system crashes after about 7 seconds. Although the computer does not re-boot, it goes back to the login screen, i.e. it seems to force a logout. Deletion of the file "libcrypto.so.0.9.8" has no effect; the crashes simply continue.

Although my computer experience goes way back to DOS, the various flavours of Windows and several programming environments like HPL, Pascal etc., I am very new to Ubuntu. I should like to get Google Earth running and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If it says something like, "Wrong Architecture", it means the type of processor your software (either Ubuntu or Skype) don't match.

For example, if you installed the 32-bit version of Ubuntu, you would have to also install the 32-bit version of Skype.

If you installed the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, you would want to install the 64-bit version of Skype.

The probably is that Skype does not official distribute a 64-bit version of it's software for Ubuntu, so you have to take a side-route to get it installed on a 64-bit OS. If you installed the Medibuntu repositories in the earlier steps (for instance, to get commercial DVD playback), then you should be able to search for Skype in Synaptic Package Manager and it **should work.**

Alternatively, you can try this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=432295

Good luck!

Hey Dave!
Your tips really helped me out. I had no idea what to do when I install this stuff. Everything worked out as you said except skype. I downloaded the .deb file but when I open it it says "wrong architecture i386"
What does that mean?

Perhaps I'm a bit more practical. My 10 things would include

Install Firestarter to manage your firewall

Install Spamassassin to check for spam in evolution (it isn't installed by default). Bogo filter is another option

install clam antivirus

install hardware monitoring for temperatures, fans, and SMART hd

Otherwise, I like your list.

kcmm, thanks for the comment.

The glitch you found seems to be exclusive to version 5. This actually solved a problem on my end (Google Earth 5 would crash while starting). You fixed it! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the guides... helped a lot..
A small note for the google-earth:
After the installation through your guides, everything was perfect, however when clicking the application to start up, google-earth, it starts, flickers and then crashes..
After a search, found the solution:
From google-earth folder, you need to delete libcrypto.so.0.9.8
Now works smooth..,
Appreciate your work!

Words not appearing on your screen likely have to do with your video card not being advanced enough to support Compiz Fusion (the eye-candy that provides the nice visual effects). Disable Compiz by clicking System>Preferences>Appearence>Effects(tab) and set it to None.

Hi Dave, thanks for your guide, it was very helpful!

We completed steps 1 - 4, but had already installed WINE, so we stopped there. After completing those steps, we tried opening Open Office, and now all the words are gone- like titles on menu bars "file, edit, view" etc. do not show up. Could these be related, or if not, do you have any suggestions for why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks!

@Johannes Eva: I've had audio problems in the past with Skype, but found that, through trial and error of the audio device settings, I got it to work. The problem is that Skype developers need to get things ironed out by updating their Linux version more rapidly. A fix will come eventually, but in the mean time, there are solutions available on the ubuntuforums.org. If you use google to search for a solution, you will likely find a way to get it to work for you. Are you having audio issues with any other applications?

@meganox: I remember when I was proof reading this thing one day at work catching those missing sudo's but getting distracted and forgetting about it. Thanks for the heads up!!!

@Boris: Thanks for the suggestion! There are other applications available via those repositories more experienced users might want to take a look at.

Great guide. Small typo:

# sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 && apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

should be:

# sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Hi Dave,

thank's for your article and description of the various software packages available for ubuntu.

I just like to add, that you could have saved yourself a lot of time using "ubuntu tweak" (http://ubuntu-tweak.com/) doing the installation tasks.

Ubuntu Tweak also adds the according sources into the sources list, so you will be automatically served with updates of the installed programs which is NOT the case if you are using "deb"-files.

By the way: Ubuntu Tweak does NOT change anything on you system any more like it did in former versions. It does not break the system in any way, but does most of the hard work described above for you.
