I installed the Kubuntu desktop package and switched to it. However, I found that I couldn't get the extra visual effects as per Gnome. Even though my Gnome set-up had Compiz installed I found I had to install it again for Kubuntu.

Is that correct? I was under the impression that KDE could do all the Compiz stuff without the need for Compiz. After a couple of hours of faffing about I uninstalled Kubuntu and went back to Ubuntu/Gnome.

You can run KDE oriented (like Amarok) in GNOME if you want. The same goes for a lot of other programs. Having both installed adds a little extra menu clutter (for instance, you'll end up with two different text editors in your accessories menu, and a few other programs that do the same thing as each other). But it's not overkill. I like the way KDE looks and the splash screen during login with the fade transitions. It's very elegant. GNOME should be catching up to this soon and I'm looking forward to seeing what it will be like in a year.

Would I be right in thinking that having both Gnome and KDE means you end up seeing menu items that are for the interface you aren't using?

Does that makes sense? If so, what do you think of that?

Great site BTW.
