I had the same problem with my WGT624v3 router where the files downloaded could not be opened or installed. Called tech support and they asked me to 'Disable SPI Firewall' in the router settings. This apparently solved the downloading issue. This was was few years back. Couple of days back my internet was intermittent. I had to restart the router every 4-5 hours to get connected. My local connections to servers and NAS were also affected. I then used the 'Test' button in the router settings instead of restarting the router while I emailed tech support for a solution (my free telephone support had expired). They then gave me some solutions which I had already tried and didnt work. Finally, they said to purchase a new router because the firmware may have been corrupted?! Why would I buy a new router if the firmware corrupts itself on its own? I haven't heard of such a thing (please enlighten me if this is possible at all). I then re-applied the latest and last updated firmware for this model and so far, it's been stable. I am waiting for a proper reply from Netgear support as to how the firmware can get corrupted. Netgear is off my list of recommended routers to buy. I may go for the Cisco/Linksys models next.

Found this blog while searching for my old WGT624 v3 DD-WRT but since its V3 all hope is lost. My WGT624 has yet to fail but the lack of range, ADSL and speed made me upgrade to a Netgear DGND3700 because if had all the features i wanted.

DGND3700 was a big dud it overheated when dual bands were used and there was a speed reduction and corruption. Got it changed with another DGND3700 but it has similar results.

Upgraded to a Belkin Play Max Modem Router it is better "After latest firmware old firmware is pooop" but still had some heat/range issues.

Now using Linksys X3000 which is better than either Belkin or Netgear and still full of feature's.

Recently, that Linksys router I bought (to replace the Netgear one I bitched about in this post) seemed to start to show signs of acting flaky. Fortunately, the model of router it is was compatible with dd-wrt open-source firmware, which it is now running. And let me tell, it is a breath of fresh air.

I'm having the same problem with my wnr3500 and that jerk on their forum site makes me crazy. I also have an open ticket, but my friends from India have come up with nothing in four days. In any case after two firmware upgrades and countless testing the only way I can get a good download is to connect to my isp directly. If I have to replace this it most definitely won't be with netgear.

I am having the same problem. I was using the WGT624 v3 and in the last month have had issues with my downloads. I figured the router was failing. I have had no problems with this model before this. I then went and bought the Netgear WNDR3300 only to have the exact same problem. I've been leary of Linksys/Cisco, but may go that route also.
