Ubuntu Linux - Frequently Asked Questions

WHY HASN'T LINUX BEEN OFFERED PRE-INSTALLED ON NAME BRAND PCs?

For years, nobody could buy a name-brand PC with a copy of Ubuntu Linux pre-installed on it. The reason behind this mostly had to do with OEM contracts between several computer manufacturers and Microsoft. Microsoft would offer their OS at a great discount to the manufactures, but at the same time, restrict their options for other OS's. In other words, Microsoft used contracts to dictate to computer manufactures what most of the market would see on the shelf. Essentially, they established a monopoly with their Windows OS in the mid-1990's, thus indoctrinating 90% of computer users to Microsoft's brand.

But times are changing!

DELL Inc. has recently unveiled a lineup of Ubuntu Linux PC's and laptops that are on sale right now. The decision to ship PC's with Linux came after Dell conducted an online survey with a large group of their current customers. Nearly two-thirds of them said they wanted to see Dell sell computers with Linux pre-installed. There was also a large amount of resistance against Windows Vista from the overwhelming majority of Dell PC users who didn't want to have anything to do with it. Michael Dell himself has even stated that he uses Ubuntu Linux on his own personal laptop.

If you are interested in purchasing a Brand New Dell PC with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, you can shop online for one by clicking here.

Dell has also produced a nice 5 minute video explaining their decision for choosing Ubuntu Linux as their Linux Operating System of choice. You can view this video by right clicking on this link and then clicking "Save As..." The video can then be played with Windows Media Player or similar media player from your computer.
